Garden Highway Levee Repairs

I got this message from RD 1000. Let's all be prepared for the shutdown of Garden Highway for levee repairs starting next month.

Beginning as soon as late December, a section of Garden Highway will be closed to traffic for up to three weeks in order to improve a section of levee as part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ flood risk reduction project in the Natomas Basin.  The closure of Garden Highway will occur underneath the Interstate 5 overpass. Detours will be provided during the closure, and will likely cause increased traffic congestion and longer commute times.  Eastbound vehicles traveling on Garden Highway will not have access to the I-5 North on-ramp during this time, while westbound vehicles on Garden Highway will not have access to the I-5 South on-ramp. Additionally, commuters travelling southbound on Interstate 5 will not be able to use the Garden Highway exit to travel east. Likewise, commuters travelling northbound on I-5 will not be able to use the Garden Highway exit to travel west on Garden Highway.  This closure will be the first in a series of Garden Highway closures and lane restrictions that will occur throughout 2019.  We understand that this will be an inconvenience to those who live and work in the region but traffic impacts are necessary in order to improve the Natomas Basin levee, which reduces the flood risk for nearly 100,000 residents and the Sacramento International Airport.    We’ll provide more information regarding the dates and duration of the closure in the coming weeks. You can stay up-to-date by following us on Facebook and Twitter or by signing up for our mailing list by contacting Tyler Stalker at spk-pao@usace.army.mil or 916-557-5100. For more information on the project, please see our project web page at www.spk.usace.army.mil/natomas
